MTV - Patterning

The following is excerpted from the Patterning Program instructions provided to the Bradshaws from The Institutes for the Achievement of Physiological Excellence.

TREATMENT PRINCIPLE: Procedure which programs the brain.

Patterning is a sensory program for your child. With each motion, you are providing your child's brain with the tactile information of "This is how it feels to move."

METHOD:

    1. The most important feature of patterning is the rhythm. Whoever turns your child's head sets the rhythm for the pattern and is responsible for maintaining a consistent rhythm throughout the patterning session.

    2. There is no perfect speed for patterning. The ideal speed for each child is one in which a child is the most relaxed and patterners can maintain a consistent rhythm. The speed may vary from session to session (as the speed of a child's crawling and creeping will vary). Whatever the speed, it should not vary during a patterning session.

    3. As you become an experienced patterner and the rhythm is smooth and consistent, begin to concentrate on the details. These are:

a. The contact of the palm of your child's hand with the surface of the table on the downward stroke.

b. The contact of the inside of your child's foot with the surface of the table as the leg is st6ghtenid

c. The foot turning in when the leg is straight

d. Right angles at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees when the arms and legs are in the flexed position.

ATTITUDE: In the long run, your child's reaction to patterning will reflect your attitude. If you feel it is difficult, or drudgery, your child will quickly get the message both from your voice and your touch. Patterning should be an enjoyable part of the program for all of you.
